What to Eat Before Yoga

Eat smart!

You’re headed to yoga class, or you’re planning to attend an early morning session, and you obviously need to eat something, but can’t decide what would be best? Keep reading, and I’ll give you my best advice, from my own experience, as well in chatting with a holistic nutritionist.

The most important thing is you want to feel comfortable in the session, but also consume enough to have the energy to practice. If you eat too much you may feel bloated, and this will affect poses like forward folds. But if you eat too little, you’ll likely feel nauseous and dizzy. You’ll read blogs that suggest practicing on an empty stomach, but then again, there are also schools of thought that ask you not to drink water during practice. I’m on the side of fuelling your body, hydrating, and feeling comfortable.

Try to finish eating at least 30 minutes before your practice.

Pre-Yoga snack ideas:

Fresh fruit + 1 tbsp nut butter (option to sprinkle chia seeds)

Banana + peanut butter

Smoothie or protein shake with greens

Sprouted grain bread + smashed avocado (option to top with hemp hearts)

Handful of almonds

Chia Seed pudding

Energy balls

After yoga class is where you want to completely refuel the body. Stay hydrated for the rest of the day, and if you had an active class you’ll want to replenish with carbs, protein, and vegetables.

Eat smart, eat clean, fuel your body, and have an amazing class ♡

Namaste,

Sophie.
